CERES – CERtification of Environmental Standards – refers to “Ceres”, the ancient Roman goddess of agriculture, who was equivalent to the Greek goddess Demeter. She represented the plenitude of crops and was a symbol for soil fertility.

CERES offers inspection and certification services in the areas of organic farming and food processing, good agricultural practice, good manufacturing practice in the food industry, organic textiles, and sustainable biofuel production. CERES works towards the following quality goals:

Ecocert Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd was registered in 2002 and has a dedicated office in Southern Africa (situated in Stellenbosch). The company’s head office in France, established in 1991, was one of the pioneers of organic certification. Ecocert has been involved in organic wine grape production and wine making in the Western and Northern Cape for many years.
